My grandmother always kept a large bed of wildflowers, well tended by the shore. The flowers were indigenous and grew wild, but she made sure they felt welcome, and they returned faithfully every year. Daisies, snap dragons, asters, roses, forget me nots, black-eyed susans, and bird's-eye grew in abundance. The smell of the flowers and the sea air evoke many wonderful memories of my east coast roots.
